Sports Hall

Skelmersdale, Lancashire

The Maharishi school is a successful independent school whose pupils achieve high national averages in their exams. But the school suffered from a lack of sports facilities, and applied for a grant to build its own sports hall. With money granted the govenors elected to build according to ancient design principles known as Sthapatya Veda. This governs not only the dimensions of the building but also the materials used. They also wanted a high level of local participation, so we were asked to provide soil testing, formwork and plant advice and training in all aspects of the building process.

After a two week induction the school’s own staff were setting up the formwork, mixing and placing material, ramming and disassembling the basic wall panels. After another training input they were using void displacement boxes competantly, thereby producing a series of windows and a door. This popular multi-use building has recently been part of a British Urban Regeneration Award.
