Chelsea Flower Show
The rammed earth wall in the 2007 ‘Best in Show’ Garden at the Chelsea Flower Show was designed by Sarah Eberle. She had only entered the competition once before and won a gold medal, so she has a pretty impecable record at Chelsea. The concept of this garden is that an astronaut doing a two year tour on Mars would need some plants to keep him from going mad, and to provide him with some fresh food.
Sarah decided to frame the garden on two sides with rammed earth walls. Rammed earth construction was a good fit for this brief as Mars does have both earth and water, the only missing elements are the labour and formwork. Compare that to the difficulties of setting up a cement factory where there is no limestone and the problem becomes clear.
