Private house

Cornwall

This house, with rammed earth plinth walls, designed by Paul Connell Architects, was built by a small dedicated team. It follows a series of design and build houses through which Paul has developed a house design envelope which aims at the Low Heat Standard which requires very low heating levels.

The house structure is built from reclaimed timber with site built infill panels. The earth walls replace earlier non-load bearing concrete block plinthes. The earth plinthes were built by the building team for which we provided consultancy. The material used was dug from the site to allow a deep soak away.

This was important in three ways;

  1. the site required a soak away, being remote, to save cost
  2. it allowed the broken concrete on the site to be usefully disposed of prior to the new build, saving cost,
  3. it provided virtually free build material from the site.
