Grand Designs 'The House That Kevin Built'
This year the hugely successful UK TV show Grand Designs decided to build their own ‘eco’ house as part of their exhibition in London’s docklands. The series presenter Kevin McCloud was going to be put on the spot in having to bring a house in on time, six days, and budget for the first time. A number of ‘eco’ contractors were commissioned by architects BBM sustainable design ltd. to produce the different building components.
We built the rammed earth wall connecting the ground and first floors. This is the single largest piece of thermal mass in the house. On the ground floor the wall separates the bathroom from the stairs, and then forms the upstairs parapet hand rail.
We built the 9m square wall using labour from the construction management team. The team was trained and executed the build in one day, showing the transferable nature of the technology.
The wall was engineered by Ellis and Moore, the soil supplied by Sporting Surface Supplies and the rammer provided by Trelawny.
Other ground floor walls by Modcell and first floor and roof by Facit.
