Community Project
Following the successful establishment of a drop-in centre close to the city centre grants were given to provide bicycles to asylum seekers through the centre. It was then decided to build a shed for the bikes using volunteer labour and found/donated materials.
Earth for the walls was delivered from a site two blocks away, dug out to allow foundations for a new building there. In Situ worked on a three day workshop to show volunteers how to mix, place and ram the walls, place and remove the formwork. The first day was spent mainly preparing the site and setting the first formwork. Days 2 and 3 were actual building days. Because of the number of volunteers and the available budget we mixed, placed and rammed manually. Normally this would be prohibitively expensive in this country, but under these circumstances having no machine noise on site was a big advantage, and cheaper too.
