CHP Boiler House
Rammed earth was an obvious choice for Energy Solutions which promotes the sustainable use of energy in buildings, industry and transport in Brent and surrounding North West London.
Energy Solutions offers a unique service to residents and businesses by providing specific advice and guidance on a one to one basis.
They approached us about their re-fit of an existing building and their wish to install a combined heat and power plant to run on bio-fuel. They needed an earth building which was seperate but close to their new headquarters. It needed to be low in embodied energy to fit with their mission statement. And it needed to be able to absorb a lot of noise from the plant to prevent disturbance to both themselves and their neighbours.
They self built much of the work, calling in expert assistance where relevant.
For the boilerhouse we spent two days on site with them following consultation on material supply and formwork requirement. The earth was a mix of graded aggregate and sand and a percentage of powder clay, mixed in their car park. We would have used site material but their site is basically solid clay, and too small to win the amount needed.
They took 5 days in all to build the walls, and another 5 to get the roof in place.
