WWF Garden, Hampton Court Flower Show

Rammed chalk was perfect for designer Fiona Stephenson when asked by WWF to create a garden that reflected the problems of draining the aquifer under the chalk downs. With garden contractors Verdant Design and Build we built a chalk wall with clear waving strata above a running stream. The chalk was sourced by Fiona after discussion with us and had a number of textures and tones which we used to produce a wall with the appearance of a cut through natural chalk downland. Nigel and the Verdant team very quickly got the sense of how to achieve the different layered look.
The whole wall, some 4 tonnes, was built on two railway sleepers to bridge the 1.2m stream, and they were supported in turn on either end by two more sleepers running either side of the stream.
