Low energy local authority classrooms

East Sussex

Following the success of the rammed earth classroom block for Plumpton College at Netherbury in Sussex three more classrooms have followed. Based on the same Passivhaus model they all share in common high mass, load bearing earth walls, extremely tight draught proofing and high levels of external insulation. Conker Conservation provided the detail envelope design and once again they were built by non specialist contractors, in this case Farnrise. All of the soil for the walls was sourced from the sites and tested at commercial labs.
The thermal performance will be monitored as certain aspects differ from the original classroom, namely the new models have air exchange units and air source heat pumps to warm under floor heating.
