Ecobarn, King Edward College

Spilsby, Lincolnshire

The rammed earth Ecobarn is another exemplar diploma classroom block, at King Edward College Lincolnshire. It includes hemp lime walls and Passivhaus design criteria. The earth wall is load bearing in the centre of the building and was built from soil dug on site with a small percentage of powdered clay added. The clay was sourced from the nearest brickworks to the site. The wall was built by local contractors D.Brown Ltd. With no previous experience of rammed earth construction they built the wall in a week after a days training in soil preparation, formwork, soil placing, compaction and dis-assembly.
