Examples in Britain

Rammed earth is just one of a number of earth technologies once common in U.K. The rammed earth heartland encompasses Sussex, Hampshire, Dorset, Oxfordshire and Wiltshire, the main areas of chalk downland. The five storey houses are in Winchester from the 19th century and were apparently built from spoil dug for a railway cutting. The old farm house with a walled garden in rammed earth is also probably mid 1800’s. Other examples are part of a post first world war reconstruction effort at Amesbury.
